What Is Multi-Factor Authentication?

MFA is a mechanism that requires users to provide at least two authentication factors to gain access to an account, resource, or application. It protects sensitive assets behind more layers of defense, thus reducing the likelihood of unauthorized access. The three most common authentication factors include:

Knowledge

Something you know (PIN, password, passphrase)

Possession

Something you have (USB key, mobile device, grid card)

fingerprint icon

Inherence

Something you are (Touch ID or Face ID)

How Does MFA Work?

When a user attempts to log in to a resource, they must verify their identity with a primary authenticator, which can be a single-factor or multi-factor. Entrust risk-based authentication (RBA) evaluates contextual information such as geolocation, behavioral biometrics, velocity, etc., to determine if a second factor or step-up authentication is required.

If the risk level based on the user request, contextual information, and resource being accessed is low then the user is authenticated and granted access. If risk level is high, then the user can either be denied or required to use a second authenticator to verify their identity before access can be granted.

Entrust MFA goes beyond traditional methods. Our AI-driven biometric verification and adaptive risk-based authentication (RBA) assess contextual signals like geolocation, behavioral biometrics, travel velocity, and device integrity.

  • Low-Risk Scenarios: Immediate access with minimal friction.
  • High-Risk Scenarios: Step-up authentication or access denial based on real-time risk evaluation.

Face Biometric - On Device

We ensure the highest level of privacy and security with on-device storage for biometric data, such as fingerprints or facial recognition templates. By keeping sensitive biometric information securely stored on the user’s device, we minimize data exposure while maintaining control over user identity.

Verification is performed in the cloud using Entrust’s advanced AI-driven biometric verification, ensuring accurate and secure authentication without compromising user privacy.

Best-in-Class MFA

Entrust Identity is the unrivaled identity and access management (IAM) platform that keeps your business ahead of ever-changing security threats and supports an unparalleled number of MFA authenticators and use cases for workforces, consumers, and citizens.

Adaptive Risk-Based Authentication

Use configurable policies within the Entrust Identity platform to incorporate adaptive RBA, dynamically evaluating user risk based on contextual data such as location, time of day, and device integrity. In low-risk scenarios, users enjoy seamless access with minimal friction, enhancing the overall experience. For high-risk situations – such as password resets or high-value transactions – users are prompted to authenticate further, ensuring they are who they claim to be while maintaining a balance between security and user convenience.
