Entrust Datacard Contributes to New IoT Security Maturity Model by Industrial Internet Consortium

MINNEAPOLIS—(April 18, 2018)—Entrust Datacard, a leading provider of trusted identity and secure transaction technology solutions, today announced its contribution to the new IIC IoT Security Maturity Model: Description and Intended Use whitepaper. The Security Maturity Model (SMM) is designed to provide actionable guidance to organizations looking at the security of their IoT solution.

The SMM builds upon the Industrial Internet Security Framework (IISF) that was introduced by the Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) in 2016. Sandy Carielli, director of security technologies for Entrust Datacard, co-authored the new SMM whitepaper in conjunction with other security leaders who are also members of the IIC.

“Entrust Datacard was eager to support this effort, as it addresses a common concern in the market: determining whether an organization’s IoT solution is secure enough,” said Carielli. “Different IoT solutions have different requirements and threat landscapes. In creating the Security Maturity Model, we strive to equip organizations with a resource that will help them set appropriate security targets, regularly measure against them and prioritize their investments accordingly.”

While IoT has undergone exponential growth, successful implementation of secure IoT solutions requires cooperation between an ever increasing number of stakeholders from the business, information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT). The SMM is designed to foster collaboration between these stakeholders with the business stakeholders setting maturity targets based on needs and risks, and the technical stakeholders periodically assessing the IoT solution and identifying the gaps between the target and current security maturity levels.
