National Savings Bank (NSB) Sri Lanka is one of the country’s largest financial institutions, with a legacy dating back to 1832 through its predecessor, the Ceylon Savings Bank. Today, NSB operates a vast network of over 4,000 service points, including branches, postal banks, post offices, ATMs, and international correspondent banks.

As part of its mission to drive financial inclusion and digital innovation, NSB sought to introduce a payment method that would eliminate the need for physical cards or cash, making secure, contactless payments accessible to a broader customer base.

Working with Entrust and local partner DMS, NSB introduced mobile NFC payments through Mastercard Pay by Account using the Entrust Digital Card Solution.

NSB wanted to provide customers with more intuitive and accessible payment options, especially for those underserved by traditional card-based systems. The bank envisioned a cardless payment experience that would allow users to make purchases directly from their bank accounts without relying on physical cards, card issuance, or legacy processing infrastructure.

Achieving this vision required overcoming technical and operational hurdles related to mobile wallet integration, secure tokenization, and compatibility with merchant systems.

Key challenges included:

  • Delivering a cardless experience: Enable customers to make payments directly from their accounts in a way that was intuitive, secure, and compatible with existing merchant infrastructure.
  • Enhancing mobile app capabilities: Upgrade the NSBPay app to support in-store contactless payments via NFC while maintaining a seamless user experience.
  • Ensuring rapid and secure deployment: Bring the solution to market quickly without compromising security, compliance, or performance.

To meet these goals, NSB needed technology and implementation partners with expertise in digital payments, mobile wallet integration, and secure tokenization.

NSB selected Entrust, in partnership with DMS, to implement mobile NFC payments leveraging Pay by Account using the Entrust Digital Card Solution. DMS, a long-standing local Entrust partner in Sri Lanka, played a key role in integrating the solution and ensuring smooth deployment within NSB’s existing infrastructure.

Delivered through an SDK, the solution enables customers to digitize their bank accounts within the NSBPay mobile app and make secure, tokenized payments directly from their mobile devices.

Key elements of the solution included:

  • Pay by Account: Digitizes and tokenizes the bank account itself, eliminating the need for physical card issuance. NSB had already implemented Mastercard Pay by Account for ecommerce and QR code payments, with mobile NFC marking the third major use case.
  • NFC Issuer Wallet: Enables tap-and-pay functionality on Android devices, allowing customers to make in-store purchases from within the NSBPay app.
  • SDK Integration: Embeds the Entrust solution into NSB’s mobile app while allowing NSB to maintain control over branding, functionality, and the customer experience.

By leveraging Entrust technology and its collaboration with Mastercard, NSB accelerated deployment and established a foundation for expanding digital services across Sri Lanka.
