What is post-quantum cryptography?

Post-quantum cryptography (PQC) is a new generation of cryptographic algorithms designed to resist attacks from quantum computers. These algorithms protect data, applications, and transactions once quantum machines become powerful enough to break today’s standards like RSA and elliptic curve cryptography. Entrust helps enterprises prepare with assessments, discovery, management and automation tools, and PQ ready solutions such as PKI and HSMs that support the NIST standardized PQC algorithms.

How does PQC work?

PQC works by using complex mathematical problems that quantum computers cannot solve efficiently. Examples include lattice-based and multivariate cryptography. In addition to pure PQC, Entrust solutions support a hybrid approach, combining today’s algorithms with PQC so organizations can maintain backwards compatibility while testing and deploying quantum-safe methods. What are the different PQC encryption methods?

The leading methods being standardized by NIST include lattice-based, code-based, multivariate, and hash-based cryptography. Entrust has taken an active role in the IETF to define standards for hybrid methods, composite certificates and multi-key algorithms. This work ensures interoperability and that enterprises can adopt PQC without disruption, while gaining confidence that their systems will remain secure through the transition.

What is an example of a PQC implementation?

One example is the hybrid method which involves coupling traditional public key cryptography–RSA or ECC–alongside a PQC algorithm. This allows organizations to begin migration while maintaining backward compatibility. Entrust has proposed and published the only draft for a composite certificate (brings both together but within a single certificate) with the IETF, giving customers a proven roadmap to implement and test PQC in real-world systems.
