Replace a Defective Board Tasks

Refer to the remainder of the document for detailed instructions.

  1. Remove the defective board from the Module Control Board.
  2. Install the new board into the Module Control Board.
  3. Fill out the Authorization Code Request Worksheet at the end of this document.
  4. Email the worksheet to the proper region.
  5. Entrust sends a Service Request and RMA number for the defective board’s return.
  6. Pack the defective board for shipment. Include a copy of the Authorization Code Request
  7. Worksheet and the service and RMA numbers.
  8. When the defective board is received, the authorization code is emailed to the listed contact.
  9. Activate the new board using the authorization code.

Replace the Module Registration Board (MRB)

NOTE: If necessary, move one cable connector at a time to make sure that the connections are identically mapped.

  1. Power off the MX Series system, but leave the Controller module powered on.
  2. Remove the front panel of the module that contains the defective board.
  3. Replace the board.
    1. Disconnect all the sensor and motor connectors from the defective board.

NOTE: If necessary, move one cable connector at a time to make sure that the connections are identically mapped.

    1. Remove the defective board from the Module Control Board.
    2. Install the replacement board to the Module Control Board.
    3. Attach the connectors to the replacement board. Make sure that the connections are properly mapped.
    4. Prepare to return the defective board. Refer to “Return the Defective Board”.
  4. Prepare the module for use.
    1. Install the front panel of the module.
    2. Disconnect the module VLAN cable.
      1. For modules that require VLAN connectivity (i.e. Barrel Smart Card), disconnect the module VLAN cable from the Controller switch.
      2. Move the cable to a different position (any ports except 21-23).
      3. Record the original port number to be reconnected later.
    3. Power on the system. The Controller module production screen shows the system Offline.
    4. Rename the MRB.
      1. Access system Diagnostics and select the module from the list of system modules.
      2. Select Utilities > Run SysCon tab.
      3. Select File > Open File and navigate to the Configs folder.
      4. Select the configuration file for the module type and click OK.

      MRB 2

      1. The default connector mapping diagram for the suspect module displays.

      MRB 3

      1. Make sure that the sensor and motor connector mapping matches the physical connections on the replacement MRB.
      2. If differences exist, move the cables connected to the MRB to match the default mapping diagram.
    1. Establish the IP Address.
      1. Select File > Export.
      2. Enter the IP address of the module. The address is in this format: 172.27.0.x.
      3. Click OK.
      4. Select Yes to overwrite the existing file.
      5. Select OK to confirm that the operation was successful.
  1. Power cycle the system, and return to system Diagnostics. The module name displays in the list of system modules.
  2. Reload the Module VPD.
    1. Select the suspect module from the list.
    2. Select File > Reload module VPD from file.
    3. Navigate to the most recent VPD snapshot zip file and select Save.
    4. Select OK to overwrite the existing file.
    5. Select OK to confirm that the operation was successful.
  1. If necessary, select the Adjust and Test tab and run exercises to verify that all module components are functional.
  2. For modules that require VLAN connectivity (such as a Barrel Smart Card module):
    1. Reconnect the module VLAN cable to its original position on the Controller switch.
    2. Power cycle the system.

Obtain an Authorization Code

Installing a replacement Module Registration Board (MRB) triggers a temporary card count limitation depending on the system type. Use the following procedure to obtain the authorization code.

NOTE: The authorization code process is time-sensitive. The defective board must be received by Entrust before Entrust releases the new authorization code. For this reason, it is critical to return the defective board as soon as possible.

This procedure is not required for Entrust employed customer engineers. Entrust employed customer engineers should use the authorization code process described in the CE Playbook.

Procedure

  1. Fill out the Authorization Code Request Worksheet attached to this document. The worksheet can be used as a guide to collect the required information needed by Entrust .
  2. Make sure to include the following information:
  • Company and contact information
  • Email and phone number for on-site administrator
  • Serial number from the defective board

NOTE: The MRB serial number is located below the sensor connectors.
User-added image

  • Serial number of the replacement board. This serial number is located in the same place as the defective board’s serial number.
  • Module type and module serial number
  • System serial number
  1. Contact an Entrust representative by Email. Send an Email to one of the following addresses and request a service request and RMA number:

When all the information is received, Entrust Order Management responds with the service request number and RMA number.

Return the Defective Board

In order to receive the activation code, the defective board must be returned to the Entrust  facility. Use the following procedure for shipping the board.

NOTE: This procedure is not required for Entrust employed customer engineers. Entrust employed customer engineers, use the existing standard parts return process.

Procedure

  1. Insert the defective board into the packaging that originally contained the replacement board.
  2. Insert the Authorization Code Request Worksheet. Make sure that the Service and RMA numbers are on the worksheet.
  3. Send the package to Entrust at the address provided on the worksheet. Write the service request and RMA number on the package above the return address.

When the defective board has been received by Entrust the authorization code is emailed to the addresses provided on the form.

Activate the Replacement MRB

When the authorization code is received, use the following procedure to write the authorization code to the replacement board.

Procedure

  1. Stop card production and access system Diagnostics.
  2. Select the Controller module from the list of system modules.
  3. Select Utilities > MRB Utility tab.
    MRB 5
  4. Select the module that requires authorization from the list and then click OK.
    MRB 6
  5. Enter the authorization code.
    1. The code entry method window displays with these choices:
      MRB 7
    • Select Type in the code to manually enter the authorization code.
    • Select Import code(s) from a file to automatically retrieve the authorization data from an external file. Navigate to the authorization file location and select it.
The code entry window displays.

  1. If the authorization code has been imported from an external file, the window displays the serial number and authorization code.
If the code was not imported from an external file:
  • Enter the module serial number.
  • Enter the authorization code.
  1. The software verifies that a valid code has been used.
Note: Do not cut and paste the authorization code, any dashes will be ignored when pasting the data.
  2. If the data is entered incorrectly, acknowledge the following MRB Utility: Entered code not accepted message and re-enter the data.
  3. When the data has been successfully entered, a window displays the authorization status. When authorization is complete, click OK.
  1. Write the authorization code to the replacement board.
    1. Power cycle the modules and reset the Controller.
    2. Access system Diagnostics and navigate to the Utilities > MRB Utility tab.<
If the key code has been properly authorized, it shows up in the list without a warning or limited card count.
      MRB 9
The software writes the authorization code to the replacement board.
    3. If the write operation fails, power cycle the module and re-enter the key code.
If the authorization code does not successfully write to the replacement board after two attempts, a new board is required. Obtain another board and re-initiate the replacement procedure. Do not reuse the service request or RMA number.
  2. Make sure that the card count message no longer displays on the operator screen. If it remains after the registration code has been written, a new board is required. Obtain another MRB and re-initiate the replacement procedure.
  3. Run test jobs on the system to ensure that all modules are functioning properly.
