Passport PKI

Passport PKI helps secure international travel

As governments have become more vigilant about security concerns at their borders, they have increasingly turned to machine-readable passports that rely on public key infrastructure (PKI). Passport PKI enables governments to issue and secure travel documents with an embedded chip that contains information about the individual, which can be verified against the printed information on the passport. PKI has become an integral technology for the security and verification technology around these passports. When governments throughout the world want to implement leading passport PKI solutions, they turn to Entrust.

Passport PKI

Entrust is a worldwide leader in passport PKI solutions

Entrust is a leading provider of layered security solutions for consumers, organizations and governments. As an innovator in passport PKI, Entrust provides software solutions that reduce fraud by verifying the integrity of the personal and biometric data contained on the chip embedded in the passport. Entrust has advised many governments on the implementation of passport PKI projects and provided solutions for countries that include the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Singapore and Slovenia.

EAC delivers stronger PKI solutions for passport control

As countries begin to look at passport programs that involve Extended Access Control (EAC), Entrust is leading this innovation as well. EAC is a second-generation framework that enables biometric data, such as an iris scan or fingerprint, to be stored on a travel document in such a way that only authorized entities are able to access it.

EAC produces ISO 7816 Card Verifiable certificates instead of x509 PKI certificates. All CVs possess short validity periods and have no revocation scheme, requiring the components in the certificate infrastructure to be coordinated for efficient management of receipt and processing of certificate requests.

EAC passports rely on higher PKI requirements because of the requirement for the chip to authenticate the reader, as well as require solutions that are highly scalable, reliable and offer unprecedented performance. With Entrust's more robust passport PKI, documents can be read by authorized agents at border stations but not by criminals who may seek access to the data.
