Entrust's CDS certificates added to company's portfolio of SSL certificates
DALLAS, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Organizations continue the migration toward the use of electronic documents to replace traditional paper-based material. To help authenticate and verify the legitimacy of these documents, Entrust, Inc. , is partnering with Adobe to offer specialized digital certificates in support of Adobe's Certified Document Services (CDS) program.
"When replacing legacy paper document workflows, digitally signed electronic documents can increase an organization's operational efficiency, reduce operating costs and increase transaction security," said John Landwehr, Director of Security Solutions and Strategy at Adobe. "Entrust's expertise in certificate services provides a global network for Adobe Acrobat and Adobe LiveCycle customers to have added assurances of authenticity and integrity of their PDF documents."
Accessible and affordable, Entrust Certificates for Adobe CDS enable organizations to digitally sign Adobe PDF files with confidence. Recipients will be able to take advantage of visual trust indicators to verify who published the document and confirm whether it has been altered. Entrust Certificates for Adobe CDS work seamlessly with both Adobe® Reader® and Adobe Acrobat® (version 6.0 or later) on the desktop and Adobe LiveCycle Digital Signatures ES on the server.
"While electronic documents are an efficient method to do business, until recently they lacked the security necessary to be accepted for official enterprise use," said Entrust President and Chief Executive Officer Bill Conner. "With the advent of this standard and the specialized certificates, organizations can be confident that electronic documents are authentic and have not been tampered with or altered."
Developed by Adobe, Certified Document Services is the first broad implementation of document validation technology based on public key infrastructure (PKI). While digital signatures have been successfully used for numerous security applications in specialized environments, CDS uses Adobe's cross-platform clients to automatically validate digital signatures.
With non-CDS signatures, a user or administrator must explicitly trust the author of a document. With Entrust Certificates for Adobe CDS implemented, trust is built into Adobe Reader and Acrobat -- no additional software download or configuration is required by the recipient of a certified document to validate its authenticity.
CDS is the first digital-signing solution that allows authors to create Adobe PDF files that automatically identify to the recipient that the author's identity has been verified by a trusted organization -- an Adobe CDS provider, such as Entrust -- and that the document has not been altered. Much like how advanced Extended Validation SSL certificates notify end-users of a fraudulent site with obvious trust indicators, CDS displays a blue ribbon and information bar at the top of a PDF to indicate the document's authenticity.
Entrust Certificates for Adobe CDS will be commercially available in early 2009.
