Croatia Turns to Entrust's Expertise, Reputation ... Government Implements Entire EAC ePassport Platform
Croatian government sought platform that included both BAC, EAC standards
Sep 21, 2009
DALLAS, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- When implementing their new ePassport architecture, the Croatian government sought to deploy the most advanced and comprehensive technology available -- all from a single trusted vendor. The Croatian leadership selected Entrust, Inc.'s products for an end-to-end ePassport PKI environment to secure citizen data and help in their compliance with the European Union's mandates on machine-readable travel documents.
"From country-signing to country-verifying capabilities, Croatia is a leader in seamlessly implementing smart, efficient ePassport architecture for advanced border security," said Entrust President and CEO Bill Conner. "This enables Croatia to continually evolve to comply with and exceed government standards, but most importantly allows them to focus on their primary goal -- the safety of citizens and the country's borders."
Featuring both Basic Access Control (BAC) and Extended Access Control (EAC) standards, Entrust's proven public key infrastructure (PKI) technology was the foundation of the deployment. In detail, Entrust provided, through its reseller S&T Croatia, automated Inspection System (IS) certificates, as well as management for centralized (IS Concentrator) and distributed (standalone IS Clients) passport verification terminals. The flexibility of the PKI architecture offered support for mixed online/offline environments of individual components.
Other primary differentiators included Entrust's commitment to third-party validation of its PKI, including FIPS 140-2 and Common Criteria, as well as the ePassport solution's success for other governments and the impressive demonstrations at the ePassports EAC Conformity & Interoperability Tests in Prague, Czech Republic, in September 2008.
"This platform is a complete end-to-end solution, eliminating the need for Croatia to design, build and maintain their own custom border security environment," said Conner. "Whether for initial deployment or ongoing expert service, Entrust looks forward to a positive relationship with the Croatian government."
Countries are in the process of evolving their ePassport programs to the second-generation framework that includes capabilities for EAC. European Union (EU) member countries were required to add fingerprint data to machine-readable travel documents (MRTDs) with the biometric information protected through the EAC scheme by June 2009. EAC deployment mandates for the U.S. have yet to be determined.
EAC provides a higher level of security during the verification process of ePassports. Not based on the X.509 standard, EAC leverages a new type of certificate established by the Brussels Interoperability Group (BIG) known as a card verifiable (CV) certificate.
First-generation ePassport standards use BAC, which features passive and optional active authentication, and is in production in many parts of the world. Unmatched in PKI deployment experience, Entrust also provides BAC ePassport security for a number of top e-governments in the world, including the U.S., U.K., Slovenia, Singapore and New Zealand.
Having been actively involved in security for ePassports from the formative stages of the technology, Entrust has the ability to migrate countries from BAC to EAC ePassports seamlessly. Working with leading system integrators, Entrust products also have unprecedented interoperability to work with these systems, providing security, integrity and access to the credentials.
