Entrust SSL Certificates Are Faster — OCSP Leverages Akamai to Accelerate Website Performance, Reliability for Global Users
Entrust’s SSL revocation response time 68 percent faster than average of other leadings CAs
DALLAS — February 25, 2014 — Entrust Certificate Services, the SSL and digital certificate division of Entrust Inc., optimizes the performance of its Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) service via Akamai’s Terra Alta enterprise solutions — resulting in greatly improved website performance, reliability and security for Entrust SSL customers and their global users.
“The online channel is a global environment, and it is critical that users across the world experience a consistent, trusted and fast browser experience — regardless of geographic location,” said David Rockvam, senior vice president of product management and SaaS offerings at Entrust. “Transitioning our OCSP to Akamai’s proven performance optimization solutions not only helps improve global coverage and reliability, but pushes our speeds toward to the top of the industry.”
According to data obtained from technology performance expert Compuware, Entrust’s average response time for checking the revocation status of SSL certificates is 68 percent faster than the average of other leading certification authorities (CA).
Entrust’s ability to leverage website optimization technology helps dramatically improve global performance and stability. Website performance is directly impacted by the speed of the revocation checks, and the site’s uptime is affected by the resiliency of a revocation service. Revocation services, which vary between CAs, are critical to customer security.
While speed, reliability and security continue to be top of mind, organizations still worry about latency issues with newer SSL technology. Entrust’s OCSP integration helps remedy these concerns, speeding customer experiences to a point where SSL certificates may be deployed on homepages. This ultimately increases customer security from the moment they engage an organization online.
Akamai’s website optimization and Web security solutions are built on the Akamai Intelligent Platform that consists of more than 135,000 servers deployed in more than 1,000 networks around the world. Because OCSP responses are cached within globally-distributed Akamai servers, revocation statuses of a certificate can be provided to the user within a minimal response time. The Akamai Intelligent Platform constantly adjusts for Internet bottlenecks and other causes of network latency, as well as routes the users to the most efficient Akamai server for their needs, thus improving performance globally.
“Entrust Certificate Services is committed to providing high-level global performance designed to support Entrust’s OCSP and effectively handle the critical certification revocation-checking process,” said Rockvam.
Entrust Certificate Services provide organizations with SSL and specialty digital certificates that are proven, cost-effective and supported by standards-based technology. Entrust’s public root is ubiquitous on more than 99.9 percent of desktop and mobile browsers.
