Entrust First SSL Company to Complete Compliance Review for New Microsoft Root Program
Successful review continues Entrust’s line of firsts in CA space; first to receive audit certification for both WebTrust for CA, Extended Validation
DALLAS, July 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — A continuation of years of leadership and innovation, Entrust, Inc. is the first public certification authority (CA) to be reviewed by a third party to comply with the technical requirements of the Microsoft Windows Root Certificate Program. Entrust also was the first CA to meet the standards set forth by WebTrust for CAs in 2001, then again for extended validation (EV) SSL certificates in 2007. The latter represented a critical shift in the verification process of SSL certificates and the strengthening of online security as a whole.
“This is yet another example of Entrust demonstrating its leadership as one of the most trusted CAs in the world,” said Entrust Certificate Services general manager David Rockvam. “Entrust embraces its responsibilities as a global CA to help secure the Internet — and its various online channels, services and applications — via digital certificates.”
As part of the new Microsoft requirements, Entrust met or exceeded 25 agreed-upon criteria in five specific categories. These categories include root certificate requirements with eight criteria; migration to 2048-bit RSA key strengths or greater with four criteria; additional security for intermediate end-entity certificates with five criteria; migration to more secure hash algorithms, such as SHA2, with three criteria; and CA practices regarding the operation of the certificate infrastructure with five criteria.
The third-party review, conducted by Deloitte & Touche, covered the periods from March 1, 2011, to February 29, 2012. CA audits or reviews typically are conducted each year to ensure proper industry standards and requirements are followed or maintained. The review was completed in accordance with guidelines published by the WebTrust organization.
