Entrust Builds On Industry Leadership With The Introduction Of A Secure Messaging Solution For Extended Enterprise And Extended Government

New Entrust Messaging Server Speeds the Deployment of End-to-End Secure E-mail

15 Oct 2002

DALLAS - Entrust, Inc. [NASDAQ: ENTU], a leading global provider of Internet security solutions and services, today announced a key addition to its Secure Messaging Solution - the Entrust Messaging Server.

The Entrust Messaging Server provides server-based secure messaging capabilities that make it easier to communicate securely within the organization as well as to external businesses, government agencies and customers, while still maintaining end-to-end security and privacy of messages and file transfers. Users do not have to understand how secure e-mail works to send and receive secure communications; a feature that helps accelerate the deployment and adoption of secure e-mail.

The Entrust Messaging Server's flexible, standards-based design provides interoperability with various other organizations' existing e-mail systems. As part of Entrust's Secure Messaging Solution, the server provides an increased return on investment for customers by lowering support costs and speeding the adoption of secure e-mail to replace slower and more expensive communication mechanisms.

The need to provide a solution for end-to-end e-mail security has been cited for both businesses and government. In a July 2002 Gartner research note by John Pescatore titled "U.S Cybersecurity Strategy Needs Short-term Success," one of the specific recommendations was to "Implement secure e-mail across the Department of Homeland Security within six months of establishment - effective collaboration and knowledge management require much more than secure e-mail, but they can't succeed without it."

Entrust pioneered enterprise secure e-mail solutions eight years ago and has been delivering innovative solutions ever since. The Entrust Messaging Server extends this leadership and innovation.

"The Entrust Messaging Server provides strong business value to the enterprise by overcoming many of the traditional barriers associated with the deployment of a secure messaging infrastructure. The product reduces processing time and the complexity of dealing with business partner's certificates at the desktop, contributing to a greater overall user experience while protecting corporate messages or file transfers," said Tim Upton, president of Titus. "After extensive testing, we found the product's non-intrusive design makes it easier to deploy with little impact on the existing messaging infrastructure. The product's ease of use extends beyond the enterprise to provide secure e-mail services in a business-to-business or business-to-consumer environment."

The server-based design of the Entrust Messaging Server helps to reduce the complexity of sending a secure e-mail, in that it is transparent to the e-mail client and does not require users to change their e-mail habits. The result is greater ease-of-use for customers which helps accelerate the adoption and use of secure e-mail. This improved user experience maintains the end-to-end security of the communication within an organization's network and over the Internet. This innovation eliminates the need to sacrifice end-to-end security for ease of use as required by other server-based approaches.

The Entrust Messaging Server enables customers to more easily extend secure messaging beyond their internal environments through a unique set of capabilities that collect and centrally store external users' digital identities (Digital IDs). The server-based architecture enables this process automatically and transparently; end users only need to know the e-mail addresses of the intended recipients. E-mail messages are secured in accordance with the S/MIME standard to allow interoperability with external users.

To further extend the value of its Secure Messaging Solution, Entrust plans to launch a secure e-mail certificate service. Available to Entrust Messaging Server customers at no additional cost, this service will allow customers to automatically direct external e-mail users to Entrust to receive a complimentary Digital ID if they do not already have one. This service is intended to allow Entrust customers to speed their return on investment by increasing the number of external users participating in secure messaging.

Entrust Messaging Server allows organizations to increase efficiencies and improve customer service by sending personalized customer statements or other Web-based messages through secure e-mail. Through the use of digital signatures, organizations can add value to e-mail systems and reduce the time and cost of conducting tasks such as contract negotiations, replacing more expensive, time-intensive courier, registered mail or registered fax options - all through a secure method of communication.

While competitive solutions force users to understand and manage desktop security, the Entrust Messaging Server enables and encourages the use of desktop security by providing automatic and transparent management of security functions for users.

"Entrust is the market leader in secure messaging for enterprises and governments today," said Bill Conner, chairman, president and CEO of Entrust. "With the launch of Entrust Messaging Server, we build on our leadership position by now delivering end-to-end secure messaging for both the extended enterprise and extended government."
