OEM alliance enables government and corporate customers to extend Entrust Secure Messaging Solution to mobile devices
14 Oct 2003
DALLAS - Entrust, Inc. [NASDAQ: ENTU], a leading global provider of Internet security solutions and services, today announced significant progress in its alliance with Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM; TSX: RIM) whereby RIM is embedding Entrust technology within its commercially available S/MIME Support Package for BlackBerry?. Entrust and RIM have worked closely to provide seamless integration with Entrust's desktop S/MIME software. As a result, RIM's wireless S/MIME solution enables government and corporate customers to extend their secure messaging deployments to users of BlackBerry Wireless Handhelds? and benefit from enhanced productivity and secure communications for mobile employees.
As a member of the Entrust Trusted Partner Program, RIM has tailored support for Entrust security solutions and redistributes this integration as part of its software add-on that delivers S/MIME (Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) support for Java?-based BlackBerry handhelds. This integration enables customers to leverage the same digital ID across the user's desktop, as well as their BlackBerry handheld, automating administration and increasing usability for mobile users.
"The combination of Entrust's PKI technology with RIM's BlackBerry wireless security architecture provides a tightly integrated S/MIME solution that allows customers to deploy BlackBerry in a broader number of environments while supporting their existing security policies and standards," said Mark Guibert, Vice President, Corporate Marketing at Research In Motion. "RIM's integration with Entrust's Secure Messaging Solution enables customers to access their secure email from both their BlackBerry handheld and their desktop PC using the same digital ID, simplifying both usability and administration."
"This alliance improves the usability of wireless secure messaging and demonstrates the power of extending strong security to wireless platforms," said Kevin Simzer, chief marketing officer at Entrust. "We believe this relationship will expand our addressable market for secure messaging solutions by extending the reach of Entrust's secure messaging solutions to the BlackBerry platform."
As a key productivity tool for executives and leaders within an organization, customers can leverage the BlackBerry solution to check the status of important issues when on the move and respond quickly to urgent, sensitive emails without having to spend valuable time dialing in to the corporate network. The message is protected at all times in transit and remains encrypted on the handheld after it is viewed.
The BlackBerry solution meets requirements at government departments, financial institutions, and other large enterprises that use Entrust secure messaging solutions to protect sensitive communications. For example, government customers will benefit from the potential to share sensitive information related to First Response systems and Homeland Security.
