For data leakage prevention, ignorance is not an option

Entrust launches content risk assessment service to help companies evaluate current data loss

06 Jun 2006

DALLAS -  When it comes to knowing how much sensitive data is leaving a company, most managers have no idea.  That is, until a data breach is exposed or a regulatory agency lets them know they have leaked sensitive information.  But every day, confidential information including intellectual property, financial information and customer data is being sent outside organizations without authorization. That is why Entrust, Inc. [NASDAQ: ENTU] has launched the Entrust Content Risk Assessment service to help evaluate a company's risk of data loss within 36 hours.

"According to a recent study by Osterman Research, 96 percent of customers studied had lost confidential or private information. Of those companies, 81.6 percent reported losing data through an accidental employee communication," said Entrust Senior Vice President Kevin Simzer. "This risk assessment service provides a great way to help determine if they have potential compliance concerns with various privacy regulations. It also can help identify if sensitive customer or company information is being sent outside the organization without permission, as well as provide an indication about whether current policies regarding the treatment of sensitive information actually are working."

As part of the Entrust Content Risk Assessment, Entrust will deploy its Entrust Entelligence™ Content Control servers to monitor and analyze various types of communications including email, instant messaging, FTP and HTTP. The Entrust Entelligence Content Control Servers will help pinpoint where and how information is being inappropriately handled.

In addition to assessing data leakage risk, the Entrust Content Risk Assessment can help evaluate if other types of violations exist such as harassment, profanity and inappropriate transmission of other sensitive human resources information. Once an assessment is complete, Entrust will provide the customer with a detailed trend report and recommendations on how to avoid future information loss.

"If we can come into an organization and identify current holes in their security, it makes the job of selecting the right security technology a lot easier," adds Simzer.
