Cyclone Solution Speeds Controlled Substance Ordering and Fulfillment

OEM Partnership with Entrust Provides Strong Security for Online Transactions

21 Jan 2004

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Cyclone Commerce, Inc. the collaborative commerce company, today announced a Controlled Substance Order System (CSOS) that is aimed at helping pharmacies, distributors, and pharmaceutical suppliers securely automate the purchase and supply of Schedule I and II controlled substances.  As part of this offering, Cyclone also announced an OEM partnership with Entrust, Inc. (Nasdaq: ENTU), in which Cyclone will use Entrust technology to help buyers place and manage CSOS orders electronically, using strong, FIPS 140-2 validated security that surpasses DEA requirements.

Cost control, heightened security, and the need for greater visibility into transactions are driving the healthcare industry to adopt electronic versions of Form 222, the DEA's paper-based form for ordering controlled substances.  Cyclone's CSOC solution helps suppliers validate each buyer, and fulfill and manage CSOS orders more efficiently, which may reduce the average cost of processing orders by up to an estimated 85 percent savings*.  It also generates an audit trail of data movement and handles electronic reporting to the DEA.

"Cyclone's new CSOS solution lets buyers and suppliers view archived orders, acknowledgements, and shipping documents anywhere in their process, even before and after translation," said Ron Gabrisko, vice president of Health and Life Sciences for Cyclone Commerce.  "You can view events in the order process, such as signing and validating orders and receiving MDNs (Message Disposition Notifications), and confirm that orders were delivered properly."

Under the OEM agreement with Entrust, Inc., Cyclone will bundle a component of Entrust's standards-based security technology with its CSOS solution. Entrust is a leader in providing solutions that secure digital identities and information and are validated against the Federal Information Processing Standard 140-1 (FIPS). The company also provides a technology foundation for the Federal Bridge Certification Authority (FBCA), a multi-agency program that enables Federal agencies to securely communicate and share information.

"The combination of Cyclone's leading B2B management capabilities with Entrust's proven security technology will help organizations easily transform their business processes as they move from paper-based to secure electronic drug orders," said Eric Skinner, vice-president, Secure Data Solutions, Entrust, Inc. "We look forward to pursuing strategic customer opportunities with Cyclone in 2004."

The CSOS initiative provides a catalyst to modernize existing ordering, tracking, and supply chain functions.  As with any industry-wide standard process, the real determination of payoff will be in the how each company chooses to implement the process.  Cyclone Commerce's solutions help buyers and suppliers of Schedule I and II controlled substances:

  • Easily connect to the DEA for reporting, complying fully with CSOS requirements
  • Automate manual order processes to increase order frequency and reduce order cycle time
  • Create real-time visibility into the entire ordering process for improved order tracking and troubleshooting
  • Reduce the supplier's burden to verify the buyer's DEA status
  • Increase security over existing processes, providing end-to-end protection of data and authentication of users and transactions
  • Automatically archive orders and recall them using human-readable formats
  • Provide audit trails and visibility throughout the entire lifecycle of each order
  • Compare an original order with actual shipment, and save adjusted version
  • Bypass antiquated communication mechanisms with an open, extensible solution that works with current IT infrastructure and handles new applications as needed
