VPN Certificates

A VPN or virtual private network is a communication link that is set up over the Internet rather than over T1 or standard telephone lines. VPNs are used in three typical scenarios:

  • for remote dial-up over the Internet for mobile or offsite employees
  • to link branch offices
  • to connect partners or suppliers to a corporate network

For everyone of these applications it is essential that the communication is encrypted, that the integrity of the data is maintained and most importantly that the access to the corporate network is tightly controlled.

VPN certificates are used to mutually identify the two devices wishing to set up a virtual private network. VPNs are typically based on the IPSec protocol. This protocol is used for encrypting the tunnel between the devices.

In support of Entrust's continuous efforts to support interoperability and open standards, this site offers vendors and customers trial X.509 certificates that can be used with IPSec IKE key exchanges.

  1. A PKCS#10 request is required in order for an X.509 certificate to be automatically generated.

  2. If you do not know how to generate a PKCS#10 request but do wish to learn more about VPN certificates, we have provided a "typical" PKCS#10 code string on the request form.

  3. If you have a PKCS#10 request from a device that you would like to test with this VPN component, simply copy and paste this request over the one provided on the request form.
